You love your image collection don’t you? So share it! . . .
share.me™ Open Archives Initiative (OAI) system allows you to open up your image collection to a larger audience – visitors to websites with federated image repositories.
A prime example in Australia is the popular Picture Australia run by the National Library of Australia, and in America, the Smithsonian Institute.
Integrating with a large and well known organisation will greatly increase access to, and awareness of your image collection.
Picture Australia allows public users to search many significant online pictorial collections at the same time. And share.me™ allows you to be part of this successful online system.
The share.me™ system works like this:
- share.me™exports a copy of your image collection metadata into your own share.me™ OAI database.
- Changes you make to your metadata are also automatically made to the share.me™ OAI database.
- The National Library system talks to your share.me™ OAI system and requests a copy of your metadata.
- Your share.me™ OAI system responds and provides the metadata mapped into the correct Dublin Core fields in the XML format.
- The ‘harvest’ of metadata is then stored in the Picture Australia system.
- When a search is undertaken on Picture Australia, if any of your images are selected, the relevant thumbnails will be downloaded on the fly from your image library and inserted into the Picture Australia results page.
- Searchers can obtain additional information on a particular image, by
- accessing the stored metadata on Picture Australia
- selecting a page from your Image Library containing a larger size image, or
- being switched directly to your Image Library.
If you wish to link to Picture Australia you can visit the Picture Australia website for an overview of how it works and how your collection may be included, and then contact National Library of Australia to reach agreement on including your collection.
